Asterix and Obelix Meet Cleopatra (Astérix & Obélix: Mission Cléopâtre) by Alain Chabat, 2002 (PG)
with Christian Clavier (), Gérard Depardieu (Paris Je T'aime, Life of Pi, Asterix at the Olympic Games), Jamel Debbouze (360), Claude Rich, Monica Bellucci (Remember Me, My Love - Ricordati di me), The Whistleblower), Alain Chabat, Gérard Darmon, Édouard Baer, Marina Foïs, Isabelle Nanty (Les Visiteurs - The Visitors)...
The Egyptian Queen Cleopatra bets against the Roman Emperor, Julius Caesar, that her people are still great, even if the times of the Pharaohs has long passed. She vows against all logic to build a new palace for Caesar within three months. Since all her architects are either busy otherwise or too conservative in style, this ambivalent honor falls to Edifis. He is to build the palace and be covered in gold or, if not, his fate is to be eaten by crocodiles. Edifis calls upon an old friend to help him out: The fabulous Druid Getafix from Gaul, who brews a fantastic potion that gives supernatural strength. In order to help and protect the old Druid, Asterix and Obelix accompany him on his journey to Egypt.
This a movie that helps you understand french culture and humor, alongside with "Les Bronzés" (French Fried Vacation), "La cité de la peur" (Fear City: A Family-Style Comedy), "Les Visiteurs" (The Visitors), and perhaps the more recent series "Kaamelott" and "Les Robins des Bois". The cast is unbelievable, they are literally all famous, brilliant and most of all funny. It is not that the movie has to please everyone, more that the sense of humor goes wide range. Therefor, each sentence is a game of word, each shot has somewhere some detail that has to be seen, a reference to a movie or culture, and of course, it is so respectful of the original book that there are jokes that comes a long way from the culture of "Asterix". Everyone can be happy. Once you saw it, you need to watch it again for all the jokes you missed that you saw the rest of the people laughing at. And eventually, give it a month and the next ten years will start repeating IMOTEP, and perhaps on other situations something more like "Vous savez, moi je ne crois pas qu'il y ait de bonne ou de mauvaise situation. Moi, si je devais résumer ma vie aujourd'hui avec vous, je dirais que c'est d'abord des rencontres. Des gens qui m'ont tendu la main, peut-être à un moment où je ne pouvais pas, où j'étais seul chez moi. Et c'est assez curieux de se dire que les hasards, les rencontres, forgent une destinée... Parce que quand on a le goût de la chose, quand on a le goût de la chose bien faite, le beau geste...". You know what I'm talking about...
